Sneak peek of "Conner's Conviction" Book 2 in the Light Covenant Chronicles

It seemed like a dream, thought Sarai. Was it just a week ago that she, Conner, and the others were celebrating the return of Alabaster? She remembered all the smiling, singing, clapping, and enthusiastic company of the other Light Covenant members. Now it all seemed like a distance memory as she now crouched silently hidden behind a large metal canister next to Lucas Chen, Max Michaels, and Lisa Zhang awaiting orders to engage a pair of dark ones to gain information. Sarai adjusted her foot, causing several dry leaves to crunch underneath. “Shhh,” scolded Max. Sarai’s face flushed, and she remained silent. Moments later, Max pointed left, indicating the way Sarai and Lucas should proceed and then right towards Lisa, showing that they would come from the opposite side. Lingering her gaze upon Max a little longer than she should, Sarai placed her hand on Lucas’s shoulder whispering, “Let’s go.” Thirty yards ahead of the children, two dark ones, backs towards them, stood silent. Drawing nearer and nearer, Sarai’s heart beat hard. Glancing at Lucas, she noticed that small drops of sweat were forming on his brow. The children moved lightly on their feet, crouched down, hoping not to be noticed. Both her and Lucas’s breathing had become more labored. She attempted to take long deep breaths to calm down, silently indicating to Lucas that he should do the same. Sarai’s mind wandered. Often, when she was extremely nervous, she would think about the past and some of the joyful memories she had. Right now, she thought about her eighth birthday and the amazing cake her mom had baked for her. The cake itself was simple, made of vanilla with green frosting. What made it so special was the decorations on top. Her mom had crafted a hobbit hole, a stone sidewalk, a fence, and topped it off with Lego figurines from the Lord of the Rings line. Sarai, being a huge LOTR fan, did not want to eat the cake because it looked so cool. She had finally gave in, but remembered playing with the Lego figurines afterwards. Lazily glancing across toward Max and Lisa, still partially lost in her memories, Sarai realized that Max was frantically moving his arms trying to get her attention. “Stop!” Max silently mouthed.
